This month Kwesé TV brings you Whitney starring Yaya DaCosta as the late American recording artist, Whitney Houston. The made-for-TV film is based on Whitney's life and her turbulent relationship with Bobby Brown. Kwesé TV is celebrating the life of a musical legend, check out 10 interesting facts about her below:

1. Houston grew up in New Jersey in the company of a musically inclined family. Her father was an entertainment executive whilst her mother, elder brother and cousins were all singers.

2. Her passion for singing started at the age of 11 when she began performing as a soloist at the New Hope Baptist Church in Newark, New Jersey.

3. Her career in music began in her teens when she occasionally sang back-up for the likes of the Michael Zager Band, Chaka Khan and Lou Rawls.

4. During the early 1980s, Houston kicked off her modelling career and ended up in Seventeen magazine as one of the first women of colour to grace its cover.

5. In 1983, after rejecting numerous other recording deals due to her mother's desire for her to finish school, Houston signed a worldwide recording contract with Arista records.

6. She then began recording singles and finally released her debut album Whitney Houston in 1985. It wasn't until her second album that her success really kicked off, earning her third spot in the late 1980s on the Forbes' list of highest-paid entertainers.

7. In 1988 she performed at London's Wembley Stadium to celebrate the 70th birthday of Nelson Mandela, who was imprisoned at the time.

8. One of her most well-known songs, I Will Always Love You (1992), became the best-selling single by a woman in music history, winning the Grammy Award for Record of the Year.

Set during this period (1989 – 1994), Whitney tells the tale of the unforgettable Whitney Houston's journey to fame and fortune and her destructive, often drug-fuelled, relationship with husband Bobby Brown.
