Alan Shearer is a legend of Newcastle football. He scored a record 260 Premier League goals and 11 Premier League hat-tricks, also a record. Last week Shearer paid a visit to Lewis Ritson, Britain’s Lightweight Champion. The tattooed Ritson was effusive in his praise of Shearer, writing on Twitter: “Childhood dream today meeting my footballing hero in @alanshearer. The man oozes class and was a great laugh, full of banter as well!! Thanks for sorting the time mate.”

This weekend Lewis Ritson takes on Belgian lightweight Francesco Patera, who was once a European Champion in the division. Should Ritson win this bout, promoter Eddie Hearn is keen to give him a try in the US. Ritson is an aggressive fighter with a sound knockout record. He’ll have plenty home fans in Newcastle cheering him on and hoping to see another World Champion in the making.

Of interest to African fans is that the undercard includes a certain Joshua Buatsi, who was born in Accra, Ghana, before moving with his parents to Croydon, England. Buatsi represented Great Britain in the Light Heavyweight division at the 2016 Rio Olympics, earning a bronze medal. In seven professional fights he has seven wins, including five knockouts. At 25 he has a great future ahead of him, displaying all the class and speed of a potential champion.
