Here’s a game for the kids: which footballer would you most like to be right now? The answer has to be Kylian Mbappe – France and Paris Saint-Germain’s (PSG) goal-scoring prodigy. At nineteen, and already a World Cup winner, he is a star for the future. Mbappe was born in Paris to a Cameroonian father and Algerian mother, which makes him 100% African by ancestry.

Kyky (as Paul Pogba likes to call him) is being hailed as the next Lionel Messi, or the next Cristiano Ronaldo – his childhood hero. But at this rate he could surpass those two greats. Since making his debut for Monaco at 16, Mbappe has scored 67 goals for club and country. At the same age Messi had 20. And he has a distinct advantage over the little Argentine. Messi has been burdened by not doing a Maradona and leading Argentina to a major international trophy. Mbappe has got that goblin off his back by emulating Pele and scoring in the World Cup final while still a teen; in the process helping Les Bleus to victory.

Nothing like a World Cup trophy to get a nation excited about international football. There is something about the French squad that inspires admiration and excitement as they prepare for the second round of UEFA Nations League fixtures. French coach Didier Deschamps and Mbappe have the sort of chemistry that many Manchester United fans would wish for Mourinho and Pogba. Deschamps recently enthused about the PSG striker: “It’s prodigious what he does and what he is capable of doing. I am privileged that he is French.” That said, Deschamps is known to push Mbappe, offering constructive criticism when called for. And for his part, Mbappe credits Deschamps for driving him to fulfil his massive potential.

Lionel Messi is the most decorated footballer on the planet. And yet he has never become complacent, working as hard as ever to stay at the top. If Mbappe adopts the same attitude, then who knows what heights await. For now, it’s a delight to see him slicing through opposition defences and flummoxing goal-keepers.
