Bollywood Bonanza

Bollywood Bonanza

10:30 SAST | 24 Feb 2017

Bollywood is not known for dark comedy, but Delhi Belly (Ch 155, 1 March at 17:00 CAT) breaks the mould, pushing the boundaries of Indian film. The payoff line sums up the film’s attitude: Sh#!t happens. It’s aimed at a hip young audience and delivers with gut laughs, racy love scenes, quirky characters, and a chart-busting soundtrack. Delhi Belly follows the antics of three messy roommates who unwittingly get caught up in a drug deal. It’s produced by Aamir Khan, who makes a very entertaining turn as a sleazy DJ, bringing down the credits with his hilarious number ‘Disco Fighter’. When Ranbir Kapoor and Chitrangada Singh backed out of the project, Aamir Khan cast his nephew Imran Khan in the lead role. Imran Khan is well-known for his acclaimed performance in the coming-of-age romantic drama Jaane Tu…Ya Jaane Na. Delhi Belly also stars Vir Das and Kunaal Roy Kapur.

You can catch another Roy Kapur in action this month on Kwesé’s Zee Bollymovies. Anditya Roy Kapur, Kunaal’s younger brother, stars in Fitoor (5 March at 18:00 CAT), which is a modernised version of the Charles Dickens classic Great Expectations. Anditya Roy Kapur plays Noor, a poor Kashmiri boy who falls in love with his boss’s daughter Firdaus, played by Katrina Kaif. Noor is sent away to London where his love for Firdaus inspires a successful art career. Years later the two star-crossed lovers meet in Delhi where their mutual attraction is tested by the constraints of a conservative society. Fitoor stars the much-acclaimed Tabu as Firdaus’s vengeful mother.

If you prefer action and thrills to laughter and love, then Don 2 will be right up your sadak (which means street in Hindi). It boasts some major Bollywood names, including Shah Rukh Khan, Om Puri and the devastatingly beautiful Priyanka Chopra. Khan plays an Indian crime lord who now to expand his fiefdom into Europe. The film is shot in India and Germany, and also stars the talented German actor Florian Lukas. If you enjoy films like Mission Impossible and Ocean’s Eleven you’ll love Don 2. It includes exciting car chases, intricate heists, action-packed jailbreaks and plenty more to keep the adrenalin flowing.
